Funding
YSI began operating through individual
contributions by a group of "trustees" who understood
the significance of the YSI mission, to develop an indigenous
infrastructure for youth service in transitional democracies
rather than sending volunteers from other countries to
perform service there. Trustees provided the initial funding
for DIA as well, until YSI was able to secure grants from
the United States Information Service, European Culture
Foundation, Levi Strauss Foundation, and Hungarian Development
Panel. Today, DIA is YSI's main partner in Central Europe,
but it is a self-sustaining Hungarian NGO whose two directors
were recently awarded Echoing Green Fellowships. |
