New Horizons
Since 2000 YSI has shifted its focus to broader international cooperation in Central and Eastern Europe.

  1. Youth service cooperation between Russia, Poland and Hungary with a planning grant from the Ford Foundation and the support of the Open Society Institute’s East East program.
  2. Evaluation of youth service in Southeast Europe consisting of 6 case studies of civic education in Serbia and Montenegro, conducted for OSI, Unicef and the Ministry of Education and Sport.
  3. The drafting of a strategic plan for youth service and civic education development in the Republic of Georgia, undertaken on behalf of the International Foundation for Election Systems in Tbilisi.
  4. Preliminary discussions with the Baltic American Partnership Fund for youth service development in Estonia, with an eye for extending youth service cooperation from the Baltic States to the Balkans.

Outside of this region, YSI is cultivating a national YSI program in Ecuador. As a preliminary step, we have organized a summer youth service exchange involving Reed College (Oregon, USA) and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, and Universidad de San Francisco (Quito, Ecuador) the past three years.
