| Slovakia: Banska Bystrica
- The City: Because of its strategic
location in the middle of the country, Banska Bystrica
is the center for government administration in the
region as well as the seat of the Roman Catholic bishop.
It attracts tourists with its beautifully restored
historical center and its active cultural life. Created
in 1225 as a copper mining town, it was the capital
of Slovakia for a few months in 1944 during a large
anti-fascist uprising.
- Local Partner: Volunteer Center.
- Coordinator: Juraj Broncek, a young
PhD candidate. He is focused on creating a strong
base for volunteerism in his city with the involvement
of the local government and media.
- Volunteer Group: Currently, he
is working with 6 volunteers ages 18 to 24 in the
local Volunteer Center.
- Sample Project: The project "Campaign
for recruiting volunteers in the local community"
began in 2002 with a comprehensive needs assessment
of Banska Bystrica, deducing what volunteer projects
could generate the greatest benefit to the local community.
