YSI invests in youth research in order to:

  • construct a better national policy framework for youth service, and
  • evaluate and refine the local, grassroots pilot projects it has initiated.

Dr. Wizner’s study thoroughly examines volunteerism in 10 Hungarian communities, spanning both the western (more prosperous) and eastern (more socially and economically challenged) halves of the country. It is an important contribution to the burgeoning youth service field in Hungary.

His research team conducted interviews with key youth stakeholders in urban and rural environments, in homogenous and more ethnically diverse (Roma) communities. His work provides a roadmap to better volunteer recruitment, program design, and a more collaborative youth service infrastructure.

Funding from the Global Service Institute enabled YSI to translate the study into English. YSI is seeking funding to conduct a second, more representative research in Hungary, while also launching a comparative international investigation (both quantitative and qualitative) across Central and Eastern Europe.
